What a poor state our lovely pier is in! And this is after the Conservative council have spent nearly half a million pounds ‘doing it up’.

I walked up and down the pier last week with friends, community leaders and local residents and everyone was disappointed; the top-layer of resurfacing was still dented, cracked and uneven. Someone told me that if he’d asked someone to do his driveway and got this, he’d ask for his money back right away.

In March this year, there was a lovely smiling photo in the local paper of Cllr. Keith Morris, Cllr Bob Frost and the MP on the pier, claiming that they were ‘working hard to get Deal Pier ready for the summer season’. Well, that was a fail, zero points all round for both effort and achievement chaps! Deal Pier has been closed for most of the sunny summer.

See the article below for evidence of their misplaced confidence:

I expect the Tory council’s latest bungle will have meant reduced tourist spend in the town over the same summer months. With the pier closed, people didn’t stay as long in town and so spent less with local businesses.

This is such a shame. Labour will stand up for the pier; we would never accept the poor quality of these repairs and we demand work that is future-proof.

Labour will also never sell off the pier at any point in the future. We are standing up and protecting our community assets.
