Countryside, Clean Air and Clean Seas
I want to see the Goodwin Sands off the coast of Deal protected from further dredging. I have promised my full support to Save Our Sands campaign. The Sands are an area of vital environmental and historic importance. See my post here.
I would ban single-use, non-biodegrable plastic bags. That’s right – ban them! Tasmania, South Australia and the Northern Territory in Australia have already done this and I firmly believe the UK should be leading on green issues and environmental protection standards.
I want to see an end to the licensing of pulse / electric shock beam trawlers in UK waters. This technique ruins huge areas of the sea bed, creating underwater deserts and decimating the stock of young fry.
On other environmental issues, I also want to ban cruel live exports; absolutely ban fracking which is still likely to happen in this constituency under a Conservative government; expedite the roll-out of tree planted to increase and replace felled tree cover in the UK and encourage the local council to begin a council-owned energy company that includes the roll-out of solar panels to those subscribing for reduced rates that put all profits back into making energy affordable for local people and ending fuel poverty.
I also want live air quality feeds relaying statistics for central Dover, Deal and a few well-chosen other areas to the council website, so that people can see how well their elected officials are doing in implementing measures to reduce toxic air pollution.
